The Monster’s Bastard
Margery carved out a life of quiet obedience in the cold stone walls of the abbey. Her daughter, ever watchful, crept alongside her like a shadow. Helen was a solemn, strange little thing. The sisters never noticed when Helen devoured a whole chicken, bones and all. They never noticed when Helen smiled sweetly with more teeth than should fit in a human mouth. The sisters never noticed Helen at all.
When the abbey’s inhabitants fall into an eerie trance and begin a silent march into the snowbound countryside, Margery knows better than to follow. She, better than anyone, knows the danger in leaving the beaten path.
